When I was a kid and I used to draw a house it looked like a box with a triangle roof, a rectangle door, and two square windows divided in two. I couldn’t quite fathom that windows would be any different than this shape, but as I grew up and developed an understanding of architecture I learned that windows could come in many varied forms.
There are many ways to make your windows more dynamic than just a quadrilateral shape. You can break up the edges with rounded windows, polygon shapes, or arch shaped doors and windows. So before you write windows off as simple rectangles or squares, take a look at some of these cool and original ways to bring window art, and by association sunlight, into your design.
Transoms
In architecture, a transom is a name for a transverse horizontal structural beam or bar. Transom windows are situated above the door in an entryway. They can be opened to provide cross-ventilation while maintaining the home’s security and privacy due to their small size and height. Historically they were popular in apartments and office buildings before air conditioning was common. Nowadays they are a dynamic accent to your entryway, letting light into your foyer, and potentially providing lots of cross ventilation.
Polygon Windows
With a polygon window you want to accentuate the unique architecture of your home. They come in varying shapes to fit into your spaces and can be combined into breathtaking beautiful accents. Another idea is to use them to create a spectacular wall of windows, showing off a beautiful panoramic view. These configurations are perfect for a lake, beach, or mountain home.
Rounded Windows
Rounded windows have one curved edge. You can place them on top of your casement window to add interest to your space and also to let a little more light into the space.
