Creating a Custom Window Design for Your Home

by Lauren Busser The House Designers’ Contributing Writer

When I was a kid and I used to draw a house it looked like a box with a triangle roof, a rectangle door, and two square windows divided in two. I couldn’t quite fathom that windows would be any different than this shape, but as I grew up and developed an understanding of architecture I learned that windows could come in many varied forms.

Integrity Ultrex Windows

For an affordable way to give your home curb appeal, select Integrity® Ultrex® windows from Marvin® Windows and Doors. This home makes great use of a variety of double-hung windows sizes combined with fixed and transom windows.

There are many ways to make your windows more dynamic than just a quadrilateral shape. You can break up the edges with rounded windows, polygon shapes, or arch shaped doors and windows. So before you write windows off as simple rectangles or squares, take a look at some of these cool and original ways to bring window art, and by association sunlight, into your design.

Transoms

In architecture, a transom is a name for a transverse horizontal structural beam or bar. Transom windows are situated above the door in an entryway. They can be opened to provide cross-ventilation while maintaining the home’s security and privacy due to their small size and height. Historically they were popular in apartments and office buildings before air conditioning was common. Nowadays they are a dynamic accent to your entryway, letting light into your foyer, and potentially providing lots of cross ventilation.

Integrity Ultrex Casement windows

Give your home an elegant look while letting in lots of natural light by combining Integrity® Ultrex® Casement windows from Marvin® Windows and Doors with transoms. They offer a wide range of shapes including rectangles, triangles, pentagons and more unique shapes to create almost any window arrangement you desire. Polygon Windows

With a polygon window you want to accentuate the unique architecture of your home. They come in varying shapes to fit into your spaces and can be combined into breathtaking beautiful accents. Another idea is to use them to create a spectacular wall of windows, showing off a beautiful panoramic view. These configurations are perfect for a lake, beach, or mountain home.

Integrity Polygon Windows

With clean sightlines and a smooth, dual-arm roto gear operation, Wood Ultrex® Casement and Awning windows from Integrity® are extremely versatile. Consider adding a round top for an extra splash of sunlight or pair them with a picture window for a cool breeze.

Rounded Windows

Rounded windows have one curved edge. You can place them on top of your casement window to add interest to your space and also to let a little more light into the space. They are an elegantly designed architectural feature of the home while still being energy efficient. They are also available with most popular options.

Integrity Rounded Top Windows

Here, the placement in the room lets this Rounded Top Window by Integrity® provide natural lighting for a home office. Adding more natural light will help reduce eyestrain and show off your beautiful decor.

If you think that your windows need to be plain and simple, think again. With specialty windows from Integrity® and Jeld-Wen® you can get as creative with your windows as you want, and let more light in at the same time.
